Why “The Rich Auntie” May Not Be That Rich!

We all have that one in our family…

You know…the fabulous well-to-do woman who lives a life of luxury, jet-setting around the world without a care in the world, attending brunches almost every weekend, sipping cocktails on a beach in Bali, and living her best child-free life. And let’s be real, that kind of freedom comes with its perks, both financially and emotionally. The only responsibility you have is coming up with an itinerary for your next vacation.

The Origin of the “Rich Auntie”:

“Rich Auntie” is a term that celebrates women without children who enjoy their lives, which includes indulging in the “finer things in life”. Legend has it that the term emerged from a combination of admiration, envy, and a healthy dose of playful teasing. You see, every family has that one relative who seems to live a life of luxury, with their designer outfits, fancy cars, and exotic vacations. And in our family, that person became affectionately known as the “rich auntie.” The “Rich Auntie” in our family are typically women who don’t have children or chooses not to have any. Hence, giving them more financial freedom. There’s no mini-me’s running around, draining her energy and bank account.

From diaper bags to day care, to youth football, to college funds, kids are like cash vacuums, sucking up every last coin faster than you can say “allowance.” So, it’s no wonder we look at our child-free auntie, thinking she’s “rolling in dough!”

However, there are also “rich aunties” who aren’t very financially responsible. Yes! they get to splurge and do and buy all these great things, and scratch islands off their bucket list, but at what cost (figuratively and literally)??

The misconception:

In today’s world of social media and curated personas, it’s all too easy to fall into the trap of equating material possessions with financial stability. However, the truth is far more nuanced. Behind the financial facade, you’d be surprised how many “rich aunties” are actually struggling with debt or living beyond their means.

“Keeping up with the Joneses”, the pressure to maintain her flashy lifestyle, poor money management, and unforeseen financial setbacks all play a key role in auntie’s rich not richin’ like the rest of us may assume. There’s also the possibility of financial illiteracy. Our auntie might lack a basic understanding of budgeting, investing, or retirement planning. It really depends on how good our auntie is with her coins!

So, next time you find yourself envying the lifestyle of the “rich auntie” in your family, take a moment to consider the bigger picture. Behind the glamorous facade, she might be facing the same financial challenges and uncertainties as the rest of us. Remember, true wealth isn’t measured by material possessions, but by financial health, security, and peace of mind.

In the age of audio/video podcasting, I think I'm one of a VERY FEW who still "blogs". I come from that old school of personal blogging. I'm a part of a generation that still appreciates the art of expression in words. I guess that's why the passion for it has never really left me.
