Jimmy Kimmel Show Got Suspended… But Let’s Be Real, It’s Not About the Jokes!

I saw the news about Jimmy Kimmel Live! being abruptly suspended, and I felt a chill over what this means for us…creatives, including writers such as myself…OR anyone, as a matter of fact, who believes being real, raw and making folks uncomfortable with the truth matters.

Here’s what went down: After Jimmy Kimmel criticized how conservatives were reacting to the killing of Charlie Kirk…claiming some in “MAGA land” were “working very hard to capitalize on the murder” politically…ABC, his parent company, took the show off air indefinitely. The catalyst: affiliate stations like Nexstar and Sinclair refused to air the show, citing that the remarks were “offensive and insensitive.” There were also warnings from FCC Chair Brendan Carr, suggesting regulatory consequences.

So why does this feel bigger than a late-night host being silenced? Because this is exactly the kind of pressure that sets a precedent. When networks, regulators, and political powers join forces, even if implicitly…you get a message: straying too far from acceptable narratives, even if truthful or necessary, can cost you.

For writers, that’s terrifying. Our work lives in truth, discomfort and the questions nobody wants to ask. If the cost for going there is cancellation, silence, suppression…then many of us will feel like we’ll have to censor ourselves and stay in “safer lanes”. That’s how creative voices get narrowed.

But I don’t want to end here feeling powerless. Because there are things we can do. Here are a few thoughts:

Build and lean into independent platforms; blogs, podcasts, newsletters…places where gatekeepers are fewer and the costs of being outspoken are lower.
Find your community. There’s strength in numbers: unions, writers’ groups, collectives. When others get silenced, having allies helps keep the conversation alive.
Be transparent with your audience. Let them into the risks and the stakes when you’re writing something bold. Trust grows when people know what you’re up against.
Know your rights (especially legal ones). Push back when boundaries are being tested. have documentation and legal counsel when needed. Raise awareness!

Because creativity is more than entertainment…it’s part of what keeps society honest. Our creativity is where our voices are heard the loudest. And if truth has a price, I believe many of us still believe it’s worth paying.
