Love, Relationships & Real Talk - Women & Men Conversations

Men Say Women Are Complicated. Women Say Men Don’t Listen. Both Might Be Right.

Somewhere, right now, a man is telling his boys, “I don’t know what she wants.”

Meanwhile, across town, a woman is texting her best friend, “I’ve literally told him what I wanted…three times.”

And honestly?

They both have a point.

The battle of the sexes has been going on for so long that if it were a TV show, we’d all be asking when they’re finally going to cancel it. Every generation has the same conversation. It’s just with different hairstyles.

Men say women are complicated.

Women say men don’t listen.

Then everybody gets online and recruits strangers to validate their side.

It’s exhausting.

Here’s the thing nobody likes to admit.

Women aren’t always complicated. Sometimes, we’re just processing out loud. There’s a difference. A woman can tell a story that starts with the cashier at the grocery store, and somehow, circles back to something her fifth-grade teacher said, includes a coworker named Denise, and ends with why she’s mad at her husband. To her, every detail mattered. To him, he’s wondering if this is a podcast with no skip button.

Now let’s be fair…men have their own unique communication style.

You ask, “What’s wrong?”

They say, “Nothing.”

Then proceed to stomp around the house opening cabinets like they’re searching for buried treasure.

Sir…

One of the funniest relationship moments is when a woman says, “It’s fine.” Now every man reading this just got nervous, because somewhere along the way, “It’s fine” stopped meaning “it’s fine.”

It became a warning label.

It’s like hearing, “We’re going to talk later.” Nobody sleeps well after that.

Relationships are a lot like assembling furniture. One person might refuse to read the instructions. The other insists the instructions exist for a reason. Somehow, both of you are staring at three leftover screws, wondering if the table is supposed to wobble.

Communication can feel exactly like that.

What’s really happening isn’t usually a lack of love, it’s translation. We as women often hear emotion behind words, but men may hear only the words.

Women may ask questions looking for connection. Men may hear those same questions as requests to solve a problem.

Social media doesn’t help either.

Every day, we’re exposed to text graphics with quotes about emotionally unavailable men, and all women are impossible to please. If the internet had its way, nobody would date anybody. We’d all just argue in comment sections until retirement.

I think real life is much less dramatic.

Most people aren’t trying to misunderstand each other, they’re just communicating in languages they assume everyone else speaks. The truth is, every person wants the same basic things.

To be heard.

To be respected.

To feel appreciated.

To know they’re safe enough to be themselves.

Everything else is usually negotiation.

Now, before someone rushes to the comments saying, “Well MY husband…” or “Well MY wife…”

Congratulations.

There are always exceptions.

Some women are incredibly direct, while some men communicate feelings beautifully. Some couples finish each other’s sentences. Others can’t agree on where to eat despite having twenty-seven restaurants within five miles.

Maybe women are a little complicated.

Maybe men don’t always listen.

Maybe women don’t always say exactly what they mean.

Maybe men assume everything can be fixed with duct tape and silence.

Maybe we’re all just beautifully imperfect humans trying to connect without a universal instruction manual.

And perhaps that’s the funniest part.

After all these years of debating who’s harder to understand…we’re still choosing each other. Maybe that’s proof that underneath all the misunderstandings, somebody is listening a little more than we think.

Or maybe someone finally said, “Fine, let’s just order pizza.”

Either way, it’s progress.
