I was devastated when I got the news that the legendary duo, Hall & Oates, would be parting ways. The Oates of the group, namely John, has recently revealed that there is likely no chance of a future reunion with Daryl Hall, as he’s “moved on” from that part of his creative life. This news comes after a legal battle when Daryl Hall filed court papers accusing his group mate John Oates of leaving him “blindsided” by secretly moving to sell his half of their joint venture to Primary Wave – an act he called the “ultimate partnership betrayal.”, according to Billboard.
I’m not going get into the dramatics of their breakup. I just want to express how disappointed I am about this break up. I mean…seeing them live was on my bucket list!
We’re talking about the kings of blue-eyed soul. One of the masters of smooth groove, and legends who made us believe in the power of music to transport us to a place where problems disappear, and only good vibes remain. Plus, their music provides me with nostalgia that I’ll forever cherish. But alas, all good things must come to an end, or so they say. And apparently, Hall & Oates have decided it’s time to part ways.
I’ll never forget the first time I heard “I Can’t Go for That”, thinking they were black until I saw the music video. I’ll never forget how “Out of Touch” became my favorite song of theirs, because I finally heard a rock song with RnB soul vibes. “Sarah Smile”, “Private Eyes”, “One on One”, and “Say it Isn’t So” became cherished songs, as well.
So, why am I so upset about this breakup? Well, for starters, it feels like the end of an era. Hall & Oates weren’t just a group; they were a cultural touchstone, and a reminder of a time when music was more than just background noise. They had a special sauce, a secret recipe for creating timeless classics that spoke to our soul.
Maybe Hall & Oates will make amends and reunite down the road. Until then, I’m going to sing along to every Hall & Oates song on my custom blue-eyed playlist like it’s the last time I’ll ever hear them.
