We all know life has a way of throwing curveballs at us and giving us plot twists to navigate through when we least expect it. Whether it’s work, personal loss, relationships, money troubles, or just those days when everything seems to go wrong, we all are no strangers to shit hitting the fan! In this think piece, I want to share how I deal with life’s challenges. It’s not always easy, but these strategies help me stay grounded, hopeful, at peace, and out of somebody’s jail.
Acknowledge Your Feelings
First and foremost, acknowledging your feelings sets the foundation. Ignoring your feelings or pretending everything is fine often makes things worse. Feel your feelings, even when you need to scream, cry, and cuss. Give those a piece of your mind, when they give that energy of needing to be checked. When life gets tough, I give myself permission to feel whatever I’m feeling—whether it’s sadness, anger, frustration, or even fear. It’s okay to not be okay sometimes. Embracing your emotions is the first step toward healing, or at the VERY LEAST, getting through the day.
Lean on Your Support System
Never underestimate the power of a good support system! Friends, family, and even colleagues can be incredible sources of strength and a good ear to vent to. When I’m being pushed to the limit, or feel like I’ll lose my freakin’ mind, I reach out to the people I trust and people I feel comfortable talking to. Whether it’s a heart-to-heart conversation or just spending time with loved ones, having someone to lean on makes a huge difference. Sometimes, just knowing someone is there for you can lighten the load. You need that one who is willing to listen and give a shoulder to cry on.
Practice Self-Care
Self-care is more than just a buzzword—it’s a necessity and a play a huge part when it comes to your overall well-being. When life gets overwhelming, it’s easy to neglect your own needs. I make it a point to engage in activities that rejuvenate me. Whether it’s reading a book, going for a walk, meditating, or even binge-watching my favorite show, taking time for myself helps me recharge. Remember, self-care isn’t selfish; it’s essential for your well-being.
Focus on What You Can Control
Life’s challenges often make us feel powerless, but focusing on what you can control can help. I make a list of things (physical or mental) I can actively do to improve my situation or my mood. That could include setting small achievable goals, or even learning something new. Shifting my focus from what’s beyond my control helps me reduce feelings of helplessness and inadequacy.
Maintain a Routine
When everything seems chaotic and out of order, maintaining a routine can provide a sense of normalcy. I stick to my daily habits as much as possible—waking up at the same time, try to eat a few minimal light meals per day, getting rest, drinking plenty of water, listen to music before the night’s sleep, etc. A consistent routine helps me stay grounded and gives structure to my day and, which can be incredibly comforting during turbulent times.
Seek Professional Help if Needed
There’s no shame in seeking professional help. Sometimes, talking to a therapist or counselor is the best way to navigate through tough times. I’ve found that therapy can provide valuable insights and coping strategies that I might not have considered. It’s a proactive step toward better mental health and shouldn’t be overlooked.
Stay Positive and Grateful
Lastly, I try to maintain a positive outlook and practice gratitude. This doesn’t mean ignoring the negative aspects of life but rather balancing them with the good. I keep a gratitude journal, that I happen to have created, where I jot down things I’m thankful for each day. When shit hits the fan, it’ll be these strategies that’ll help me navigate through them. Life is full of ups, downs, SQUARES AND CIRCLES, but remember, you’re not alone. Everyone has their struggles, and it’s okay to ask for help and take time for yourself. Stay strong, keep believing in yourself, and know that better days are ahead.
